WHAT IS CHAI?

Chai, or cha, simply means tea. It often refers to a particular type of chai made by brewing milk, tea, medicinal and aromatic spices and roots. Chai dates back thousands of years and recipes vary greatly, both regionally and home to home. 

In the mid 90’s, the chai-inspired “chai latte” or “chai tea” (literally “tea tea”) gained popularity. Although these beverages have their own appeal, they are generally made from syrups and offer a different experience than a traditionally hand-brewed chai.

STORY

Raj is a Bronx based chef and musician. Inspired by watching his grandmother from Karachi, Pakistan and mother from Lucknow, India brew various types of chai daily, as soon as he could reach the stove, Raj began his culinary journey making chai for his family and their friends. Over the past decade he has honed his craft working in a diverse range of cuisines in kitchens around NYC. Raj overcame his health challenges with Lupus through diet and lifestyle changes, went on to study holistic nutrition, and adapted these ancestral recipes into a plant-based diet which became an anchor in his healing journey. Roots Chai was born out of a passion to share these delicious teas with the world with the intention of supporting others through their own healing journeys.
